The Two Colors of the Antigonon Flower
vuong-thanh’s translation of the popular Vietnamese poem
“Hai Sắc Hoa Ti Gôn” by T.T.Kh

One autumn, long ago, at every sunset
I would pick fallen petals and not feeling sad
Sun rays tinged my long tresses of hair
While waiting for him to come with love
He often seems aloof, gazing at the road
To a distant horizon shrouded in myst and danger
Fingers touching tendrils of white flower
His face melancholy, his mind wanders
He often caresses my locks of hair
And sighs heavily when I am feeling gay
Saying: “Antigonon flower looks like a broken heart,
I’m afraid our love would end up like that”
At the time, I didn’t understand
That tattered flowers means parting of lovers
Smiling, I said “The flower’s white color
symbolizes the untainted, unchanging heart”
Didn’t know then that when one person leaving ,
The life of another would be half missing
Under this blue sky, love in my heart is dead
He’s so far away, I’m so sad
On a joyful day with firecrackers strewn on the streets
Since then, autumn comes and autumn goes
How long will my heart stays in frost ?
My husband knows that I still yearn for another
So he treats me with indifference and coldness as winter
I still walk on the side lane of life,
Beside the bland love of husband of mine
But as each autumn, each autumn is dying off
Shadows of him still haunts my heart
So sad, today reading a novel
Heard everyone compare the antigonon flower
Red like a heart broken
Red like lover’s blood crimsoned
I remember he once said to me
On an autumn day so long ago Till now I understood, it’s too late
I had erred and lost the chance to live wih my heart’s mate
I dread of autumn evenings with pale sun rays
The cold wind brings memories of a cloudy day
He waits for a boat to cross the river
Since then, our lives have gone their separate paths forever …
If he knows that I’m married
O Heaven ! Would he be sad ?
Would he think of all those tattered flowers
Like broken hearts, like lover’s red blood ?

Hai Sắc Hoa Ti gôn
- T.T.K.H.

Một mùa thu trước mỗi hoàng hôn
Nhặt cánh hoa rơi cảm thấy buồn
Nhuộm ánh nắng tà qua mái tóc
Tôi chờ người đến với yêu đương
Người ấy thường hay ngắm lạnh lùng
Dải đường xa vút bóng chiều phong,
Và phương trời thẳm mờ sương, cát
Tay vít dây hoa trắng chạnh lòng
Người ấy thuờng hay vuốt tóc tôi
Thở dài trong lúc thấy tôi vui
Bảo rằng: "Hoa, dáng như tim vỡ
Anh sợ tình ta cũng thế thôi!"
Thuở ấy nào tôi đã hiểu gì
Cánh hoa tan tác của sinh ly
Cho nên cười đáp: "Màu hoa trắng,
Là chút lòng trong chẳng biến suy!"
Đâu biết một đi một lỡ làng,
Dưới trời đau khổ chết yêu đương
Người xa xăm quá! Tồi buồn lắm,
Trong một ngày vui pháo nhuộm đường...
Từ đấy, thu rồi, thu lại thụ..
Lòng tôi còn giá đến bao giờ
Chồng tôi vẫn biết tôi thương nhớ
Người ấy, cho nên vẫn hững hờ
Tôi vẫn đi bên cạnh cuộc đời
Ái ân lạt lẽo của chồng tôi,
Mà từng thu chết, từng thu chết
Vẫn giấu trong tim bóng một người
Buồn quá! Hôm nay xem tiểu thuyết
Thấy ai cũng ví cánh hoa xưa
Nhưng hồng tựa trái tim tan vỡ
Và đỏ như màu máu thắm pha!
Tôi nhớ lời người đã bảo tôi
Một muà thu trước rất xa xôị..
Đến nay tôi hiểu thì tôi đã
Làm lỡ tình duyên cũ mất rồi!
Tôi sợ chiều thu nhạt nắng mờ
Chiều thu hoa đỏ rụng. Chiều thu
Gió về lạnh lẽo chân mây vắng
Người ấy sang sông đứng ngó đò
Nếu biết rằng tôi đã lấy chồng
Trời ơi! Người ấy có buồn không
Có thầm nghĩ tới loài hoa vỡ
Tựa trái tim phai, tựa máu hồng
